Denver's event desk · the Saturday, July 25 edition
What's actually worth doing in Denver.
South Broadway answered the UMS move to RiNo by throwing its own festival, and it wraps Sunday. Tonight Aurora opens the Havana Street Night Market season while Cheesman Park fills with 150 juried artists, all of it free. The art museum's big Australian show leaves after tomorrow, and an 88-year-old banda plays the National Western on Friday. Comfortable shoes. No other plans.(Gil)
The sleeper · the small show that beats the big one
Banda El Recodo and Los Recoditos at the National Western Complex
Banda El Recodo has been a working band since 1938, which means the institution playing the National Western Complex on Friday predates the Broncos, the interstate system and most of the state's liquor licenses. They headline a regional Mexican bill with Los Recoditos at 7 PM, $50 plus about $8 in fees, all ages. Eighty-eight years of Sinaloan brass does not pass through town that often, and the Complex is the right kind of big concrete room for it. Bring someone who knows the words.
Fri, Jul 31 · National Western Complex · $50 + $8 fees
